Registration & Practice

Do I need to be registered to practice architecture in Zambia?
Yes, under the Zambia Institute of Architects Act, Cap 442, only registered architects may practice architecture in Zambia. Registration ensures professional competence and protects the public interest.
What are the requirements for registration?
Requirements include a recognized architectural degree, completion of the professional practice examination, and a minimum of 2 years practical experience under the supervision of a registered architect.
How often do I need to re-register?
Re-registration is required annually. Members must submit their re-registration application and fees before the deadline to maintain their practicing status.
Can foreign architects practice in Zambia?
Foreign architects must apply for registration with ZIA and meet the requirements set out in the Act. Temporary registration may be granted for specific projects subject to Council approval.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

What is CPD and why is it important?
CPD (Continuing Professional Development) ensures architects maintain and enhance their professional knowledge and skills throughout their careers. It's essential for staying current with industry developments, technologies, and best practices.
How many CPD hours are required annually?
Members are required to complete a minimum number of CPD hours annually. Please check with the ZIA secretariat for current requirements and approved CPD activities.
What activities qualify for CPD points?
Approved CPD activities include workshops, seminars, conferences, online courses, technical presentations, research, publications, and teaching. All activities must be relevant to architectural practice.

How can I verify if an architect is registered?
You can check the Register of Architects on our website or contact the ZIA secretariat to verify an architect's registration status.
How do I file a complaint against an architect?
Complaints should be submitted in writing to the ZIA Council, detailing the nature of the complaint and supporting evidence. The Council will investigate and take appropriate action in accordance with the Act.
